GNTC Electrical Lineworker Program

Course Description

Georgia Northwestern Technical College and Georgia Power have partnered to offer an Electrical Lineworker Program at the Polk County Campus in Rockmart. We encourage anyone interested in enrolling to review the program highlights, essential functions, and eligibility requirements and to apply. Highlights & Essential Functions:

  • 12-week training program
  • Training takes place Mondays – Thursdays from 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM
  • Training takes place at GNTC's Polk County Campus in Rockmart, Georgia (466 Brock Road)
  • Participants learn Lineworker organizational principles, workplace skills, and lineworker automation and occupational skills
  • Upon successful completion of the program, participants have the opportunity to earn an Electrical Lineworker Certificate, a restricted Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)*, American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED, and OSHA 10-Hour General Industry Card 

*Class A CDL will be restricted to automatic line trucks due to equipment availability.

Program Eligibility Requirements:

  • Program Fee: $7,500 per person
  • Applicants must be 18 years old at the start of training
  • Applicants must have a valid Driver’s License
  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Applicants must be able to read, write, and speak English (the program is taught and delivered entirely in English)
  • Applicants must be drug-free
  • Applicants must climb and work suspended above ground up to 100 or 200 feet depending on the type of linework
  • Applicants weigh no more than 270 pounds due to OSHA equipment restrictions
  • Applicants must have the physical ability to lift equipment weighing 50-pounds or more
  • Applicants are required to successfully complete a TABE test.
  • Applicant must have the ability to earn a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

Application Requirements:

To be considered for admission into the Electrical Lineworker Program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must be 18 years old at the start of training.
  • Complete the online Lineworker Program application.
  • Valid Driver's License: You must provide a copy of a valid driver’s license.
  • Class A CDL Eligibility: You should have the ability to earn a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Education: You must provide proof of high school diploma or GED.
  • TABE Assessment: You must achieve an NRS Level 4 or better on the TABE Assessment.
    1. Register for the TABE Assessment by contacting Anne Clay with GNTC Adult Education. Ms. Clay may be reached at aclay@gntc.edu or 770-684-7521.
    2. An NRS level 4 score is required on the TABE Assessment.

If you do not score a Level 4 or better on your first attempt, you will be required to complete 40 hours of study before being allowed to retake the assessment.

Additional Pre-Enrollment Requirements:

Along with submitting your application, you will need to complete and submit the following at your own expense:

  • Provide proof of DOT physical.
    • DOT physical must be provided by a physician on the DOT Registry. To locate a registered physician near you, visit DOT Registry.
    • Obtain your physical AFTER you receive your CLP.
  • Provide proof of a passed five-panel drug screen within 30 days from the start of training.
    • A drug screen must be administered by a physician on the DOT Registry, preferably from the same location as your DOT physical.
    • Drug screens cannot be accepted more than 30 days from the start of training
  • Submit a satisfactory seven-year motor vehicle report (MVR) within 30 days from the start of training.
    • The MVR must indicate no DUI within three (3) years and no more than four (4) violation points.
    • MVR cannot be accepted more than 30 days from the start of training.
  • Provide a copy of your Class A Commercial Learners Permit (CLP)

 

Possible financial assistance options for qualifying individuals:

  1. Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) funds.

The Northwest Georgia Regional Commission covers 15 counties located in northwest Georgia. Link to 15 counties covered: https://www.nwgrc.org/about/ $6,500 of the $7,500 tuition cost will be covered. You will be responsible for the balance of $1,000.

2)  Sallie Mae Student Loans are also available.  You can apply individually, or with a co-signer.  Loans are available for the full tuition ($7,500) and in some cases, an additional housing allowance may be added.
